Achilles Tendon Ruptures

Anatomy & Pathology

Two muscles on the posterior side of the leg insert on the achilles tendon which then attaches to the heel bone.  These muscles act to plantarflex at the ankle.  A violent contraction of the muscles can lead to a rupture of the tendon.

Symptoms
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Defect in tendon that is palpable
  • Weakness
